ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY AGENDA The Climate Stewardship Act (S 342) or (HR 759) COEJL has long led the Jewish Community’s advocacy for cleaner air, a healthier planet, and energy security. We have a clear moral obligation to protect human life, human health, and the environment, and this legislation is an important step in the right direction. The bill would reduce the dangerously high level of current greenhouse gas pollution by scaling back emissions to year 2000 levels by 2010. By creating a business-friendly design in which unused emissions credits can be bought and sold, the plan introduced by Senators Lieberman and McCain will have a positive effect on the environment, and will encourage American industry to be more innovative and cost effective, leading to further economic growth. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions will also help address another crucial issue for America —energy independence. America needs to reduce its reliance on oil through the rapid adoption of clean and renewable energy sources and new technologies. This bill will help us reach this goal. |
