At the University of Pennsylvania, students Rachel Gross and Aviva Horrow spearheaded an effort to green Hillel. Their main areas of focus for 2004-2005 were establishing / improving recycling in the building and looking for ways to reduce the use of disposables (especially styrofoam) in the kosher dining hall. Currently the recycling challenge is to promote recycling at Hillel so that students know about it and do it. Regarding dining, all administrators and staff who have so far been part of the conversation have expressed support, and the concern about disposables, which troubles many Penn Hillel students, is working its way up the ladder of power.

Tzedek, Hillel's community service group, usually includes a park cleanup or two among the project choices for the annual Mitzvah Day, and in 2005 also offered a Tu B'shvat seder for the Hillel community.

A new Hillel group in 2004-2005 is the Jewish Outdoor Club (JOC). They like to do fun things outside.
