Hanukkah

Eight days of Hannukah doesn’t mean eight nights of material gifts! During this Festival of Light, set an eco-example and spread the light onto others!

~Thinking Outside the Gift Box~

  • For each day of the holiday, pledge to help out around the house in a different way. You can create your own coupons offering to clean the house, do the laundry, cook dinner, or whatever it is your loved one could need a hand with!
  • Give someone tickets to a show, a certificate to a favorite restaurant, a pass to a botanical garden or national park!
  • Latkes and Jelly Doughnuts, My oh My! Put your cooking skills to the test! Give someone special a Hanukkah themed lunch or dinner with the foods of our ancestors! Get locally grown potatoes and jelly. See Local Harvest and Tuv Ha’artetz at Hazon! You can even sign another up to receive deliveries of fresh produce from those Community Supported Agriculture(CSA) farms.
  • Get off oil! While the oil lasting eight days was a miracle, we need not rely on another one to save us from today’s energy crisis. To do our own part to find alternate renewable energy resources, donate or invest in someone’s name, for sustainable technologies such as solar, wind, or hydropower.
  • Buy carbon offsets in the recipient’s name! Or, with a Drive Neutral Certification, help the gift-receiver neutralize his/her carbon emissions for a whole year!
  • Plant a tree in honor of some special! You can do this in Israel, America, or any country or backyard of your choice!
  • Make an impact on the world in honor of the holiday by donating to a charity. Try the Charity Navigator .
    • Support environmental research projects or protect endangered species and habitats through the Nature Conservancy and have an e-card sent while doing it!
    • Help fund community-based eco-projects such as climate change education, green technology, and reforestation through Global Giving Green!
    • Adopt an endangered animal!
  • Subscribe the recipient to an environmental magazine such as National Geographic or buy an interesting environmental book!
  • Buy someone song downloads from iTunes! They’re better than piles of CDs that just lie around!

~Material Gifts Rethought~
