Rededicate Yourself to Protecting the Earth - A Hanukkah Pledge

On Hanukkah, we celebrate the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem. As the Temple no longer stands, the entire Earth is a dwelling place for the Shechina, the Divine Presence. During Hanukkah, we can rededicate ourselves to protecting the Earth – the only home we have – and its special places – where many of us encounter God.

Let us be inspired this Hanukkah, the holiday of rededication, to rededicate ourselves to protecting the Earth – God's creation – for generations to come.

I hereby rededicate myself to protecting the Earth. I commit to:

use low energy compact fluorescent light bulbs
turn off lights and appliances when not in use
recycle and use recycled paper products
lower my water heater temperature by 10 degrees
take the bus, walk, or carpool instead of driving alone whenever I can
look for opportunities to save energy, reduce waste, and protect habitats
speak out about protecting the planet, alongside my fellow Jews
learn more about the connections between Judaism and the environment, and the steps I can take to make a difference

Bonus!
On Hanukkah, we are called to "publicize the miracle" of the oil – pirsum ha nes. Think of ways that you can publicize modern-day energy miracles.

Some suggestions:

  • Buy a compact fluorescent light bulb for a friend as a gift, and tell him/her about how much energy and $ it will save!
  • At your next staff meeting, go over the easy things people can do to save energy (i.e., turn off the lights when leaving a room, shutting off computers at the end of the day, fixing drafty windows, photocopy double-sided). Tell your colleagues which steps you’re going to take, and encourage them to join you.
  • Share your completed rededication form with your family and friends. Ask them to join your efforts.
  • Write an article for your synagogue bulletin about the energy audit and conservation steps you've taken.
