ACTION ALERT ARCHIVE COEJL ACTION ALERT: Update on the Energy Bill Thanks to hard work and commitment of activists around the country, on November 21st the Senate was successful in filibustering the Energy Bill and stopping its passage into law. The calls, emails and faxes that were made by COEJL members and other concerned citizens were essential in winning this tightly contested victory. The good news is that Americans aren’t being forced to foot the bill for millions of dollars in new subsidies for oil, gas and coal companies. We aren’t allowing these same companies to exploit and pollute our few remaining wild spaces, and we aren’t protecting companies that allow toxic poisons to seep into drinking water supplies. Had the bill passed, that’s what America would have gotten for Hanukkah and Christmas. The Senate will be back to work in January, and Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TN) has stated that breaking the filibuster and passing the Energy Bill is one of his top priorities. So take a deep breath, enjoy your holidays, and gather your (renewable) energy for the next round in “the People vs. the Polluters”.
