Rabbi Jill Hammer is the director of Tel Shemesh, a website and spiritual community celebrating and creating earth-based Jewish traditions. She is a ritual-maker, myth-weaver, and teacher of sacred text, as well as a poet and author whose work has been published in many journals and anthologies, such as Lilith, Bridges, Response, The Jewish Spectator, Biblical Women in the Midrash, and The Women’s Torah Commentary. Her first book (JPS 2001) is entitled Sisters at Sinai: New Tales of Biblical Women, and her second book, The Jewish Book of Days: Legends and Meditations for Every Day and Season of the Jewish Year will appear in 2006.

She conducts workshops around the country on contemporary midrashic writing, bibliodrama, Jewish legends of nature, and creative ritual. She has served as the editor of Journey at Ma’yan: the Jewish Women’s Project of the JCC in Manhattan , and as the editor of Living Text: The Journal of Contemporary Midrash. Rabbi Hammer was ordained as a rabbi by the Jewish Theological Seminary in 2001, and holds a Ph.D. in social psychology from the University of Connecticut .
