Rotting Log Investigation

Divide into small groups. Locate a fallen, or rotting log. Look on, under and inside the spaces of the log. Record observations. Look for fungi, lichens, sawdust, borings, mosses, seedlings, tooth marks, exoskeletons, seed cases, nut shells, holes, webs, pupa cases. Lift the log gently and look underneath to see who lives there, and why. Be sure to put the log down gently so as not to disturb the dwellers.

Discussion:
Share observations. Point out how the combination of actions by plants (especially fungi) and animals and weather factors, ultimately causes the total breakdown of the tree into rich soil that supports other life.
