Description
My Minyan, Dorshei Derekh of the Germantown Jewish Centre, has done an alternative form of mishloach manot for the last two Purims. Members are invited to donate money, instead of handing out home-baked and/or purchased
goodies which were always wrapped in plastic and given in disposable containers.

Instead each household receives a basket (actually a reused clementine box!) full of goodies, and the remainder goes to food related causes. Last year we included a CFL bulb in each as well, and still had over $1200 to donate to
Mazon, Philabundance, and International Hunger programs. We like diverting the time, energy, and resources - instead of everyone heading off to the market for all the baking supplies, one person does all the shopping - and we each get some nice treats, attractively presented. In an amount that a family can actually consume. (Previously a good portion of what each household received wound up in the garbage.)

People who prefer to give their mishloach manot privately are still free to do that; this is our public celebration minhag. People who love to bake get together and contribute their goodies, which are included in the baskets, which increases the amount we can give to tsedakah.

We include interesting educational info as well, plus encourage the minyan to donate any tsotshkes sitting around - fancy tea, little books, toys et al. We also include environmental information, and line the baskets with a cloth towel, to emphasize sustainability. We try to include healthy food in the basket. Maybe this year we'll use as much organic as possible.
