Introduction - Game (10 minutes) - 00:00


Choose one of two games, ?Sukvivor? or ?Mishpoche Feud.?
The content of games is nearly identical.


Game Option 1: ?Sukvivor?


  • Game show host enters
  • He/she announces the game ?Sukvivor?. Teams compete for prizes.
  • The team that completes its sukka first wins. To build a sukka you need all three parts:
    • Walls
    • Skach
    • Decorations
    • To get each sukkah part, each team must win at a series of challenges.
  • Host divides the audience into 3-4 teams
  • Note the board which indicate info that may help with the challenges

The Challenges


  • Host: ?I?ll read the challenge. You then have 30 seconds to confer with your team. Then you must perform the challenge.?
  • Challenge 1: Sing a song in Hebrew or English with the theme ?Nature.?
    • After 30 seconds, each team performs
    • Host awards the winner the ?Walls? of sukkah (see List of Supplies)
    • Host calls up new rep from each team.

  • Challenge 2: Sing a Hebrew or English song with the theme of ?Water?
    • Host awards winner Walls or Skach (see List of Supplies)
    • Host calls 2 people from each team
  • Challenge 3: Act a short skit that uses the words Skach, Harvest, and Myrtle.
    • Host awards winner Walls, Skach, or Decorations
  • Challenge 4: Create a short dance with theme of Joy or Unity
    • Host awards winner Wall, Skach, or Decorations
    • Host calls up one rep
  • Challenge 5: Create a funky dance and shake of the lulav and etrog

Host awards winner Wall, Skach or Decorations

Host awards first (and maybe second and third) prize: organic produce!

  • Game show host asks pre-bar mitzvah kids to join helper and go to other room for kids program
  • (Kids prepare for Children?s Play ? see separate ?Children?s Program? script)
  • Game show host introduces speaker for Module 1

Game Option 2: ?Mishpoche Feud?


  • Game show host enters
  • Host announces the game ?Mishpoche Feud.? Teams compete for prizes. The team that gets the most points wins. The topic: Sukkoth.
  • Host divides the audience into 3-4 teams: The Goldbergs, The Goldsteins, The Goldstones, The Goldwins
  • ?Let?s look at the questions. We surveyed Jews across North America about their knowledge on Sukkoth. The team that guesses the most popular answers wins the most points.?

    • ?Team 1, what is your guess?? Let?s team 1 answer. Removes sign, if answer is on the board.
    • ?Team 2, what is your guess?? Let team 2 answer. Removes sign, if answer is on the board.
    • Repeats process for teams 3 and 4.

    Okay now let?s go to question 2; what is the major theme of Sukkoth?

Module 1: What is Sukkoth? (25 minutes) - 00:10

    • Adam va-Adam is a Jewish environmental group based in BC.
    • Established in 1999
    • Mission is raise the awareness of environmental issues in the Jewish community and general public in BC and draw connections with our tradition
    • Been very active to date:

      • Environmental education at Jewish days schools and Hebrew schools

    (this can be scaled back ? just suggestions)
    • Centrality of food and agriculture in Sukkoth
      • ?When the temple stood, the alter elevated humanity. Now that the temple does not exist, our table becomes our alter.? (Babylonian Talmud, Menahot 97A)
      • Three pilgrimages related to bringing harvest to temple (Peach, Shavout, Sukkoth)
      • Role of kashurut (big topic but worth a mention)
      • Reason we say brachot over food
        • Thinking, leads us to examine kavanah
        • If no thought ? leads to abuse

    • Centrality of stewardship of land
      • Psalm 24:1 ? ?The earth is G_d?s and the fullness thereof; the settled lands and the its inhabitants.?
      • Psalm 115:16 ? ?The heaven?s are G_d?s heavens, but the earth G_d gave to humankind.?
      • Interpretation: Earth is Hashem?s until we say a blessing; after blessing, earth becomes ours
      • Shmita year (connection with land)

  • Host leads blessing over organic apple
  • Host directs pre-bar/bat mitvah kids to other room for crafts project

Module 2: Agricultural Teaching (25 minutes) - 00:35

  • Choose an agricultural theme. If you select organics, introduce Organic Broadcast CBC video. If you choose GE foods, show The Genetic Takeover.

Module 3: Weaving it Together (30 minutes) - 01:00

Option 1: GE Foods

  • Speaker introduces three themes:
    1. GE Foods and Jewish Tradition
    2. GE Food and Health
    3. GE Foods and Globalization

Option 2: Organics

  • Speaker introduces two themes
    1. Organics
    2. The Four Species (local versus distant)
  • Break into groups
  • Appoint a spokesperson
  • Discuss in groups (20 min)
  • Reconvene and report in (5 min)
