Lead Pipes.
Congress banned the use of lead pipes 35 years ago — but because of inadequate investment in clean water infrastructure, 10 million U. S. households still rely on lead pipes to deliver their drinking water. This is a public health disaster — and also a matter of racial and economic justice, because these lead pipes disproportionately threaten communities of color and low-income communities. We can prevent the poisoning of the brains of millions of children by removing all lead service lines. The cost would be approximately $45 billion — but the benefits in preventing lead poisoning for generations to come is priceless. Unfortunately, only $15 billion is allocated for replacing lead pipes in the bipartisan infrastructure bill, so unless another $30 billion is included in the reconciliation package, we’ll only get 1/3 of the job done. But it is far from clear that the Democrats negotiating the reconciliation package in the House and Senate will include this money.
Critical decisions will be made in the next 1-3 weeks, so Congress needs to hear from us now! If your Representative and/or one or both of your Senators caucus with the Democrats (that includes Senators Sanders and King), please call them and express the importance of protecting countless children from lead poisoning.
Once you’re ready to take action, just call the Capital Switchboard at 202-224-3121 and ask for your Representative/Senator by name. Make sure to mention that you are doing this as an expression of your Jewish values and the importance of Tikkun Olam, the repair of our world. If you do call, please drop us a quick note at [email protected] to let us know which office you contacted, who you spoke with, and what the response was.
